On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Microsoft shipped its monthly security updates, and for several products that many Los Angeles offices still use every day, that batch was the last one. Office 2021 stopped receiving security fixes. Windows 11 version 24H2 stopped receiving them on Home and Pro PCs. The paid security program for Windows Server 2012 ended for good. Nothing crashed on Wednesday morning, and nothing will. That quiet is exactly why this deadline gets missed.
If your front desk still opens Word from a copy of Office Home and Business 2021 that someone bought with the computer, or your accounting team runs on PCs that have not taken a feature update in a year, this one is about you. Here is what changed, how to check your office in an afternoon, and what to do about each piece.
What actually ended on October 13, 2026
Start with Office. Microsoft's end of support notice for Office 2021 says support ended on October 13, 2026, with no extension and no extended security updates. That covers the one time purchase editions sold to small businesses and households, including Home and Business, Professional, and Home and Student, on Windows and Mac according to Microsoft's Office 2021 lifecycle page. The volume licensed Office LTSC 2021 reached the same date. The apps still open, but Microsoft no longer fixes security flaws in them.
Publisher went with it. Microsoft says the perpetual version of Publisher lost support on October 13 along with Office 2021, and that Publisher is being removed from Microsoft 365 subscriptions on or shortly after October 1, 2026. If your office keeps flyers, menus, or newsletters as Publisher files, those files need converting.
Windows came next. Microsoft's Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle page lists October 13, 2026 as the end of servicing for version 24H2. Most small business PCs run Windows 11 Pro, so a PC still on 24H2 is now missing security updates even though the computer itself is perfectly modern. Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 run until October 2027, which is why a larger company's laptops may behave differently from yours.
For offices still holding Windows 10 machines, the business version of Microsoft's paid program entered its second year. Microsoft's Extended Security Updates page for organizations puts year one at $61 per device and says the price doubles each consecutive year. It also says a business joining in year two has to pay for year one too. You may have read that Microsoft extended free consumer updates to October 12, 2027. That is true, but Microsoft's consumer program page says it cannot be used in commercial scenarios, and devices joined to a domain or Microsoft Entra, or enrolled in device management, are not eligible.
On the server side, Microsoft confirms that the October 13 update was the final security update for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 under its paid program. Windows Server 2022 also left mainstream support, though its security updates continue until October 2031 according to the Windows Server 2022 lifecycle page. If staff run Office on a shared Windows Server 2022 desktop, Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps on that server will stop at Version 2608 and receive only security updates until October 10, 2028.
What was missed: a license that lasts forever and protection that does not
The confusion with Office 2021 is understandable. It was sold as a one time purchase, and the license really does last. What does not last is Microsoft's willingness to fix it. A perpetual license means you may keep using the software, not that it stays safe.
That matters more for Office than for almost anything else on a PC. Every attachment your staff opens, every invoice, every contract, every spreadsheet from a vendor, is handled by those apps. When a new flaw is found in Word or Excel after October 13, Microsoft fixes it in supported versions only. Your copy stays exposed for as long as it stays installed.
The Windows 11 problem is different. These PCs usually missed the move to a newer version for ordinary reasons: someone paused updates during a busy season, a policy set years ago deferred feature updates, or a driver blocked the upgrade and nobody looked. The machine reports that it is up to date because, from its own point of view, nothing is waiting. Meanwhile, it has quietly fallen off the supported list.
How to check your office in one afternoon
You do not need special tools to find the problems. On each PC, type winver into the Start menu. The window that opens shows the Windows version, and anything reading 24H2 on a Home or Pro edition needs attention. Then open Word, go to File, then Account, and read the product name under Product Information. If it says Office 2021, Office Home and Business 2021, or Office LTSC Standard 2021, that copy is unsupported.
Write down what you find in a simple spreadsheet with the user's name, the Windows version, and the Office version. For servers, ask your IT provider for the exact Windows Server version of every machine, including virtual ones. A good IT asset management practice keeps this list current automatically, which is how a provider catches deadlines like this before they pass.
What to do now, piece by piece
For Office 2021, most businesses are better served by moving to the desktop apps included in Microsoft 365 business plans, because those apps stay current as long as the subscription is active. Our comparison of Microsoft 365 business plans explains which plans include the installed apps and which offer only web versions. If a one time purchase still fits your budget better, Office 2024 is supported until October 9, 2029 according to its lifecycle page, which simply resets the clock.
For Publisher, follow Microsoft's advice and convert files now. Saving each file as a PDF preserves the look, and Microsoft points to Word and PowerPoint as replacements for most flyers, labels, and newsletters. Microsoft also offers a sample script for bulk conversion, which your IT provider can test and run for you.
For Windows 11 PCs stuck on 24H2, the fix is usually small. Microsoft's IT Pro guidance describes version 26H2 as an enablement package for devices already on 24H2 or 25H2, and Microsoft's support article for the 25H2 package describes a move from 24H2 that needs a single restart. On Home and Pro, 25H2 is supported until October 12, 2027, and 26H2 runs into October 2028. Before pushing it to everyone, find out why each PC was held back, since a blocking driver or a deferral policy will hold it back again. Our patch management guide covers how to set deferrals so they protect you without stranding you.
For Windows 10 machines, compare the year two cost against replacement. A PC that cannot run Windows 11 is usually old enough that the money is better spent on a new machine, and our article on when to replace business computers walks through that math. Microsoft notes that Windows 365 Cloud PC subscriptions include extended updates for Windows 10 devices that connect to them, which can bridge a small group of machines.
For Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2, there is no paid option left. Take those machines off the internet, limit who can log in, and move their work to a supported server or to the cloud as soon as possible. If you are weighing those two paths, our breakdown of server versus cloud lays out the tradeoffs.

Questions about the October 13 Microsoft deadlines
Will Office 2021 stop working?
No. Microsoft says the apps may continue to function, but they no longer receive security fixes, bug fixes, or technical support. The risk grows each month as new flaws are found and left open in your copy.
Is it safe to keep Office 2021 for just one or two users?
It is a risk you are choosing, and it is rarely worth it for anyone who opens email attachments. If a user truly only edits internal files on a machine with no email, the exposure is smaller, but write down that decision and set a date to end it.
Our PCs say Windows 11 24H2. Do we need new computers?
Almost never. A PC running 24H2 already meets Windows 11's hardware requirements. It usually needs only the enablement package and a restart to reach a supported version.
Does this affect HIPAA or our cyber insurance?
The HIPAA Security Rule requires practices to analyze and manage risks to patient data, and unsupported software on a machine that touches patient records is a risk that analysis should address. For insurance, read your application and policy for any question or exclusion about unsupported software before your next renewal, and answer it accurately.
What should we do with old Publisher files?
Convert them to PDF for viewing, or rebuild the ones you still edit in Word or PowerPoint. Microsoft recommends doing this before Publisher is removed, and once the app is gone from your subscription, opening those files gets much harder.
